Encompasses bridge engineering, commercial and industrial building structures, water-retaining structures, chimneys and silos. Our skills and experience range from the design of new infrastructure to condition assessment of existing infrastructure, repair, rehabilitation design and strengthening of existing structures.

Specialist expertise includes incrementally launched bridge construction and jointless post-tensioned ground slabs.

Areas of expertise:

  • Bridge design
  • Bridge rehabilitation
  • Commercial buildings
  • Industrial buildings
  • Water-retaining structures
  • Heavy engineering structures
  • Jointless post-tensioned floor slabs

Projects successfully completed:

  • Design of most of the non-power island infrastructure at Medupi and Kusile power stations
  • Sunderland Ridge sewer-purification works
  • Design of Gautrain bridge substructures from the Johannesburg International Airport to Midrand
  • Design of the support structure of two bridges on the N2 in the Transkei area, one with a span of 560m and the other a series of 280m spans
  • Design of a retail centre for the Tshwane Fresh Produce Market

A few photos of typical projects undertaken by Nyeleti's structural engineers.

Completed projects with Structural Engineering.

As far as possible all buildings on the plant were designed on the "green building" principle. This principle takes into account materials, construction methods, energy efficiency and impact on the environment and occupants. High levels of dust and noise had to be taken into account as well as a very corrosive environment. Due to the nature of the plant and the program, construction methods allowing fast construction had to be considered. Structural detailing was done utilising the latest 3D detailing technology.

The project consisted of the design and detailing of the substructures for 7 of the viaducts on the southern line of Gautrain. These substructures included piles, pile caps, spread footings, piers, pier heads and perched abutments. For each of the 7 viaducts, the substructure was designed based on the geological conditions and geometry.

The Reading Interchange cut-and-cover tunnel structure formed part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), Package E2. SANRAL appointed the UWP - Nyeleti Joint Venture as consulting engineers with Nyeleti Consulting responsible for the structural design and UWP Consulting responsible for the geometric alignment and road design. Siyavaya Joint Venture was appointed as main contractor. The Reading Interchange was selected by SANRAL as one of the GFIP focus points. The design team was requested to incorporate artistic and aesthetic elements in the design in order to create a visual experience for the road user over-and-above the functional solution to traffic flow requirements. Technical excellence on this structure consisted of the incorporation of architectural design expertise as to ensure an aesthetically pleasing structure, the provision of high quality concrete finishes and to provide adequate lighting with coloured lights with the tunnel structure.
